High energy scattering at strong coupling from AdS/CFT

Triggered by the experimental results at RHIC, there is currently a large interest in understanding the high energy interactions of the quark-gluon plasma in a regime where the coupling is effectively strong. This problem is particularly favourable for applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence, in that some crucial properties of QCD which are difficult to accomodate in this framework, so like confinement and the conformal anomaly, become less important at finite temperature and/or high energy. \par The AdS/CFT results that I shall review in my talk reveal an interesting physical picture for the high energy interactions at strong coupling, which is however very different from the corresponding picture at weak coupling: The strongly coupled matter involves no pointlike constituents (so like the `valence partons' in QCD), rather it shows a smooth structure on all the resolution scales. Accordingly, in a high energy collision involving this form of matter, there will be no jets in the final state, but only an isotropic distribution of relatively soft hadrons. This also means that an energetic probe propagating through a strongly-coupled plasma will loose energy via parton branching as opposed to medium rescattering.
